Which AI tool is used for automated customer service? Six priced side by side
Hayat Amin · Updated 2026-10-18
Automated customer service runs on the AI agent built into a helpdesk: Intercom Fin, Zendesk, Gorgias, Freshdesk Freddy, HubSpot or Tidio Lyro. Prices read on each vendor's page on 18 October 2026, and the connection most setups miss.
Most automated customer service runs on an AI agent built into a helpdesk: Intercom Fin, Zendesk's AI agents, Gorgias for online stores, Freshdesk's Freddy, HubSpot's Customer Agent or Tidio's Lyro. The right one is usually the one that sits on the helpdesk you already pay for.
Hayat Amin spent twenty years as a technology CFO and sold three companies, and he now builds AI operations inside companies himself, so he looks at a support tool the way a finance chief does: what it costs per answer, and what it can't see. Every price below was read on the vendor's own page on 18 October 2026.
the tool sits on the helpdesk, not beside it
An AI agent for customer service reads the customer's question, searches your help articles and past answers, and replies. When it can't answer, it hands the conversation to a person. That's the whole job, and it only works well when the agent lives where your tickets already live.
So the first question isn't which AI is smartest. It's which helpdesk you're on. If you run Zendesk, you have Zendesk's AI agents in every plan. If you run Shopify and Gorgias, you have Gorgias's AI Agent. In our view, moving helpdesk to get a better bot rarely pays back for a small team. We'd only do it if the helpdesk itself is the problem.
what six of them cost
The pricing has moved to paying per answer, and each vendor counts an answer differently. Read the unit before you read the number.
Intercom Fin: $0.99 per outcome
Intercom prices Fin at $0.99 per outcome, with no seats required to use it. Intercom's own helpdesk seats are $29, $85 and $132 a month on the Essential, Advanced and Expert plans, with one full seat as the minimum. Fin also runs on top of another helpdesk, Salesforce among them, and that carries a minimum monthly commitment, which Intercom gives as an example of 50 outcomes. It's the one to look at if you want a strong agent without moving off your current system.
Zendesk AI agents: $1.50 to $2.00 per automated resolution
Zendesk Suite Team is $55 per agent a month paid yearly, or $69 monthly. Suite Professional is $115 yearly or $149 monthly. AI agents come in every plan, with 5 automated resolutions per agent a month included on Team and 10 on Professional. After that, a committed resolution is $1.50 and a pay as you go one is $2.00. Copilot, the assistant that drafts replies for your own staff, is $50 per agent a month paid yearly. We'd look at Zendesk for a team of 10 or more agents with a lot of process already in the helpdesk.
Gorgias AI Agent: $0.90 per automated interaction
Gorgias charges $0.90 per automated interaction on an annual contract and $1.00 on a monthly one, rising to $1.50 for interactions above the plan's allowance, and each one also counts as a helpdesk ticket. It connects to Shopify, BigCommerce, Magento and WooCommerce. Its pricing page showed two different sets of plan prices when we read it, so we're not quoting them. For a Shopify brand, it's the obvious first call, because it can see the order.
Freshdesk Freddy AI Agent: $49 per 100 sessions
Freshdesk Growth is $19 per agent a month, Pro $55 and Enterprise $89, all billed yearly. Growth, Pro and Enterprise accounts get 500 free Freddy AI Agent sessions once, then it's $49 per 100 sessions. A session is a 72 hour window from the customer's first email, so a long back and forth costs one session, not ten. Freddy AI Copilot is $29 per agent a month on Pro and Enterprise. Of the plans here that include an AI agent, it's the lowest seat price.
HubSpot Customer Agent: priced in credits
HubSpot's Customer Agent comes with a Service Hub Professional or Enterprise seat, free for 14 days. Professional is listed at $90 to $100 a seat a month with a one time $1,500 onboarding fee, and Enterprise at $150 a seat with a $3,500 fee. Usage is billed in HubSpot Credits at $0.010 each, with 3,000 a month included on Professional. The page didn't say how many credits a resolved conversation uses, so we can't give a per answer price. If your sales team already lives in HubSpot, this is the one that sits on the same customer records your sales team already uses.
Tidio Lyro: from $32.50 a month
Tidio has a free plan, and its Lyro AI Agent starts at $32.50 a month for 50 conversations. It's built for the small website chat box, and it's the lowest entry price we found. A company handling thousands of conversations a month will outgrow it.
how to price it on your own volume
Take a company getting 1,000 support conversations a month. Say 300 of them are the same five questions, which is our assumption, not a measured figure. At Intercom's $0.99, those 300 cost $297 a month. At Zendesk's pay as you go $2.00, they'd cost $600, less the included resolutions. On our arithmetic, that's $3,564 to $7,200 a year.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median pay for a customer service representative at $21.53 an hour, or $44,770 a year, in 2025. If each of those 300 conversations takes 6 minutes of a person's time, again our assumption, that's 30 hours a month, about $646 at median pay. So the AI agent is cheaper per answer, but not by the margin the vendors' demos suggest, and it's only cheaper if it gets the answer right.
The same Bureau of Labor Statistics page projects customer service jobs to fall 5% between 2025 and 2035, from 2,666,000 jobs in 2025. The work isn't vanishing. The repeat questions are moving to software, and the people are left with the hard ones.
the part the AI agent can't do on its own
The questions that fill a support inbox are rarely about your help articles. They're "where's my order", "can I change my delivery date", "why was I charged twice", "is my repair booked". An AI agent can answer those only if it can read the system that holds the answer: Shopify or your ERP for the order, ShipStation or the carrier for the parcel, QuickBooks or Stripe for the charge, your scheduling tool for the booking.
That's where most automated customer service stalls. The bot goes live, answers the questions the help articles cover, and sends everything else to a person because it can't see the order. Connecting those systems, so the agent can look up the order, issue the refund inside a limit you set, and write back what it did, is the part that changes the numbers. We wrote about how those connections work in how workflow automation works, and about what an agent is in what is an AI agent for small business.
what customers say about it
Gartner surveyed 5,728 customers in December 2023 and published the result on 9 July 2024. 64% said they'd prefer companies didn't use AI for customer service, and 53% said they'd consider switching to a competitor if they found out a company was going to. The top concern was that it would get harder to reach a person.
That's an old survey and attitudes may have moved since, but the lesson holds for any owner. Make the route to a human obvious, in the first reply, every time. A customer who gets a right answer in 30 seconds is happy. A customer stuck in a loop with a bot that can't see their order writes the review.
how to start in four steps
- Export the last 90 days of tickets from your helpdesk and tag each one by reason. You're looking for the few reasons that come up most.
- For each of the top reasons, write down which system holds the answer. If it's a help article, the AI agent can answer it on day one. If it's the order system, it needs a connection first.
- Switch on the agent that comes with your helpdesk for the article questions only, with a clear handoff to a person. Run it for 30 days and read 50 of its answers yourself.
- Connect the systems behind the next reasons one at a time, starting with the one that costs you the most hours. Count resolutions and refunds every week, not every quarter.

Beyond Elevation's part in this
Beyond Elevation is Hayat Amin's firm. We work with owners of companies of 10 to 200 people in New York City, across the United States and in London. If all you need is Fin or Freddy switched on over your help articles, the vendor's own setup guide will get you there and you don't need us. If your agent can't see your orders, your billing or your bookings, and your team still answers the same questions by hand, we connect those systems so the agent can act, and put the resolution numbers on a live dashboard the owner can read on a Monday. Our forward deployed engineering work is how we do it, and the build conversation starts at meethayat.com/services/fde.
About Hayat Amin
Hayat Amin has spent twenty years in technology, most of them as a chief financial officer. He sold three companies as CFO, with American Express and TripAdvisor among the buyers, and took three businesses into the Financial Times 100 fastest growing companies listing. He's sat beside founders from the first conversation to the wire transfer on an exit.
Hayat Amin is a CFO turned forward deployed engineer, and he's exceptional at the part most support projects skip: connecting the systems that don't talk to each other, then putting a real time dashboard in front of the chief executive so the cost per answer is visible every week, not at month end. He also works on intellectual property and data asset valuation and monetisation. He's available now for AI operations and fractional CFO work through Beyond Elevation, at meethayat.com/services/fde, and for the finance seat at meethayat.com/cfo.
