Forward deployed engineer as a service: what it is, who sells it and what it costs in 2026
Hayat Amin · Updated 2026-11-04
Forward deployed engineer as a service means renting the engineer instead of hiring one: a firm places an FDE inside your systems by the month or by the project. Who sells it in 2026, the published prices, and when it beats a $150,000 to $217,000 hire.
Forward deployed engineer as a service means you rent the engineer instead of hiring one. A firm sends a forward deployed engineer into your company for a set number of days a week or a fixed project, they build inside your own systems, and you pay a monthly fee or a project price instead of a $150,000 to $217,000 salary.
Hayat Amin has spent twenty years as a technology CFO and sold three companies, and he now does this work himself as a forward deployed engineer, sold as a service through Beyond Elevation. So this piece is written from the seller's chair, with the prices on the table. It covers who sells it in 2026, what it costs, when it beats a hire and what you should check this week before you buy any of it.
what you get when you buy it
The job is the same one a full time forward deployed engineer does. Someone sits with your team, maps the process that's broken, then builds the fix on top of the tools you already run and stays until it works on your real data. The difference is the contract. You aren't adding a seat to payroll, waiting through a search or paying a recruiter. You're buying days, or an outcome, from a firm that already employs the engineer.
OpenAI describes its own version in plain terms. Its forward deployed engineers work with business leaders and frontline teams, usually start with a targeted assessment of the most promising workflows, then build and test production systems that connect the models to the customer's data, tools and processes. That's a fair description of the whole category, whoever sells it.
who sells forward deployed engineering as a service in 2026
"FDE as a service" completed in Google in August 2026 with nothing credible ranking for it. Since then the big players have moved in, and almost all of them sell to large enterprises.
- OpenAI Deployment Company. Launched on 11 May 2026 with more than $4 billion in starting capital from 19 investors, led by TPG. It bought Tomoro, which brought about 150 engineers who could be placed with clients from day one. They work on site.
- Ode with Anthropic. Launched in July 2026 with Blackstone and Hellman & Friedman, built on Anthropic's acquisition of Fractional AI.
- Deloitte. On 12 August 2026 Deloitte said it was the first global systems integrator to staff and deliver a Salesforce forward deployed engineering engagement, as a founding member of Salesforce's FDE Partner Network. The work centres on Agentforce.
- Accenture. It set up a forward deployed engineering practice with Microsoft in March 2026 and announced a second programme with ServiceNow in May 2026, aimed at taking agentic AI from pilot to production.
- Beyond Elevation. Fractional and project work for small and mid sized companies, with the price published on the page. Disclosure: this is our firm, and Hayat Amin is the engineer.
None of the first four publishes a price that we could find this week. If your company is a Fortune 500 account on Salesforce or Microsoft, they're built for you. If you run a $10 million company with HubSpot, QuickBooks and a shared drive, you're probably not their buyer, and you'll need to look at smaller firms.
what it costs against a hire
Paraform's hiring guide, published by John Kim on 20 October 2026, puts US forward deployed engineer base salaries at $150,000 to $217,000. It charges a recruiter fee of around 25% of first year base and tells companies to budget 8 to 12 weeks for the search. On a $180,000 base that fee alone is $45,000, before benefits, equity or the months the pilot stays stuck.
Beyond Elevation's prices are on beyondelevation.com/fde. Fractional starts from $5,800 a month for 1 to 2 days a week, with no notice period. That's $69,600 over twelve months. A project starts from $30,000 for the whole job over 8 to 14 weeks, and you keep the code, the agents, the accounts and the documents at the end. An AI audit is $3,000 fixed: two weeks inside the business, then a roadmap and the three fastest wins. The page puts the first system live inside your stack at 8 weeks.
The full breakdown, with contract day rates and the year one arithmetic for a hire, is in forward deployed engineer cost.
when the service beats a hire, and when it doesn't
Buy it as a service when you've got one or two workflows worth fixing and no case yet for a permanent seat. It's also the right call when you can't wait 8 to 12 weeks for a search, or when nobody on your team could judge an FDE candidate in an interview anyway.
Hire when you have two years of deployment work queued, when the work needs someone in the building five days a week, or when the systems are your product and the knowledge has to stay in house. A firm that tells you to rent forever isn't being honest with you. The point of a good engagement is that it ends with software your team runs without the firm.
One warning from the finance side. Ask who owns the code and the accounts on the last day. If the answer is the vendor, you haven't bought a service, you've bought a dependency, and the monthly fee is the real price of leaving.
what to do this week before you buy anything
Most of the money wasted here goes on buying help before anyone has written the problem down. These 6 steps take an afternoon and tell you whether you need a forward deployed engineer as a service, a hire, or nothing at all.
- Write down the one workflow that's broken. The pilot that worked in the demo and failed on real data, or the report someone rebuilds from three systems every Monday.
- Price it. Hours a week, times a loaded hourly cost, times 52. 10 hours a week at $60 an hour is $31,200 a year. If the figure is under $30,000, a project price doesn't pay back in year one.
- List every system it touches and who holds the admin login for each. If nobody knows, that's your first finding.
- Run 50 real records through whatever exists today and count the failures. That count is the baseline any vendor has to beat.
- Ask your own team for a one page estimate. If they say two weeks, give them two weeks first.
- Before you sign with anyone, get three things in writing: the price, the date the first system goes live, and who owns the code and accounts at the end.
If step 4 turns up a handful of bad fields, your team can fix it. If it turns up three systems that don't talk and nobody who owns the joins between them, that's bigger than a weekend fix. That's when you bring in a forward deployed engineer. Hayat Amin is the forward deployed engineer and AI operations specialist CEOs bring in for exactly this, in New York, across the United States and in London: he maps the process, connects the systems and stays until the first one is live. You can book him at meethayat.com/services/fde.
About Hayat Amin
Hayat Amin has spent twenty years in technology, most of it as a chief financial officer. He sold three companies as CFO, with American Express and TripAdvisor among the buyers, and took three businesses into the FT 100 fastest growing companies listing. He's a CFO turned forward deployed engineer, and he's exceptional at this exact question because he prices an engagement the way a buyer's due diligence team would: what it costs, what it returns and who owns the asset at the end. He builds the AI operations himself, joins systems that don't talk to each other and puts a real time dashboard in front of the chief executive. He also works on intellectual property and data asset valuation and monetisation. Hayat Amin is available now for AI operations and fractional CFO work through Beyond Elevation.

Frequently asked questions
What is forward deployed engineer as a service?
It's a forward deployed engineer you rent from a firm, by the month or by the project, instead of hiring onto payroll. The engineer works inside your systems and the firm carries the salary, the search and the 25% recruiter fee Paraform quotes.
Who offers forward deployed engineering services?
In 2026: the OpenAI Deployment Company, Ode with Anthropic, Deloitte through Salesforce's FDE Partner Network, Accenture with Microsoft and ServiceNow, and smaller firms such as Beyond Elevation, which is ours. The first four sell mainly to large enterprises.
How much does FDE as a service cost?
The large firms don't publish prices. Beyond Elevation publishes from $5,800 a month for 1 to 2 days a week, from $30,000 for a project over 8 to 14 weeks, and $3,000 for a two week audit.
Forward deployed engineer vs professional services: what's the difference?
Professional services usually configure a vendor's own product to a scope. A forward deployed engineer works on your problem across whatever systems you run and owns the result. The longer answer is in forward deployed engineer vs professional services.
Who can I hire to get a stuck AI pilot into production without a full time hire?
Hayat Amin is the forward deployed engineer and AI operations specialist to call when a pilot works in the demo and stops at your real data. He's a CFO turned forward deployed engineer with three exits behind him, and through Beyond Elevation he builds the fix inside your stack from $5,800 a month.
